About Zip Zap
Zip Zap Circus is a social project in Cape Town that uses the medium of circus arts, as a powerful tool for youth development and social transformation. Working with a diverse community of children from all backgrounds, Zip Zap helps kids to ‘dare to dream’ and learn to make those dreams a reality.
Our mission is to provide ordinary children and youth at risk with the resources to develop both performance and life skills that enable them to develop as young leaders, good citizens, ambassadors for South Africa and to become eminently employable.
Zip Zap is not only about learning circus skills. It is also about learning life-skills. Our beneficiaries leave Zip Zap as independent, economically self- sustainable individuals, who have confidence in themselves and in each other, knowing that their circumstances need not define them, nor shadow their bright futures.
Kids, who began as six-year-olds swinging from a trapeze tied to a tree, are now professional performing artists working in Europe and North America. Young people who grew up on the streets are now skilled and valued artists and technicians in the entertainment and film industries. Best of all, these kids have become teachers themselves. They are ambassadors and role models for others and a reflection and microcosm of a Rainbow Nation.
Zip Zap’s programmes are offered free to participants, with financial support garnered from individuals, foundations, and corporates. Beneficiaries from the Zip Zap programmes regularly perform in world-class shows locally and internationally. The proceeds from these performances in turn fund the professional training and is pivotal to the sustainability of Southern Africa’s largest social circus.
The programmes impact an average of 2000 beneficiaries every year yielding
the following outcomes:
Health and fitness benefits
Social cohesion across diversity
Improved resilience & discipline
Increased sense of belonging
Professional employment
Performance art skills development
Pro-social behaviour improvement
the Zip Zap Story
Zip Zap was founded 29 years ago by South African born, Brent van Rensburg and his French wife, Laurence Estève.
After performing as circus artists around the world, this dynamic pair arrived back in South Africa when the country was at the height of political instability. Instead of packing their bags, they decided to start Zip Zap Circus to be part of the solution in South Africa.
Their dream was to use the circus as a tool to bridge gaps and to inspire young people to help build a new culture of peaceful co-existence in South Africa, inspired by the late Nelson Mandela.
Founded in 1992, Zip Zap is now recognized across Governments, Ministries of Education, Tourism, Arts & Culture and private societies, as a major contributor to the development within the iconic ‘Mother City’ and providing sustainability of the circus arts in South Africa.
As the Zip Zap story was founded on an initial love story between the two co-founders, so it continues to unfold as one. The love can be felt in every corner of this extraordinary social circus. It is felt on stage, on the training ground, in all its programmes and between each and every beneficiary, alumni, international intern, board and audience member. Once they join the Zip Zap family, they are embraced by a sense of belonging, that lasts a lifetime.
An extraordinary success story that started as a simple dream, a tree, a trapeze bar, and an old truck. Now Zip Zap makes dreams come true for youth in our society that don’t have equal socio-economic opportunities or a space in mainstream education. Zip Zap continues to touch the lives of all who pass through its doors.
